The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had the deepest connection to the Qur’an in terms of recitation, understanding, and implementation. Allah revealed the Qur’an to him so that he might convey it to humanity through recitation and explanation. The Prophet ﷺ received the Qur’an directly from Jibreel (Gabriel) عليه السلام through oral transmission, and he then recited it to his companions exactly as he had received it—without addition or omission—and with the highest degree of humility, reflection, and devotion.
The Prophet’s ﷺ recitation of the Qur’an was not merely the reading of words. It was a complete act of worship in which the heart was fully present, the limbs were humbled, and the soul was deeply affected by the words of Allah. The Companions رضي الله عنهم carefully preserved detailed descriptions of his manner of recitation, making it the ideal model for anyone who wishes to recite the Qur’an as it was revealed.
First: He ﷺ Recited the Qur’an in a Clear and Measured Manner
Allah commanded His Prophet:
“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.” (Qur’an 73:4)
The Prophet ﷺ implemented this command practically by reciting the Qur’an slowly and deliberately, pronouncing each letter clearly and giving every letter its proper articulation and characteristics. He did not rush through the recitation or merge words together carelessly.
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها described the recitation of the Prophet ﷺ by saying that he would recite “verse by verse.” This means that he would pause at the end of each verse and give every verse its own distinct stop, allowing for deeper reflection and understanding of its meanings.
Second: He ﷺ Beautified His Voice with the Qur’an
The Prophet ﷺ had a beautiful voice when reciting the Qur’an. He encouraged Muslims to beautify their recitation, saying:
“Beautify the Qur’an with your voices.”
He also loved listening to the Qur’an being recited by others. On one occasion, he asked Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه to recite the Qur’an to him. When Ibn Mas‘ud reached the verse:
“So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness and bring you, O Muhammad, against these people as a witness?” (Qur’an 4:41)
the Prophet ﷺ said, “That is enough for now.” Ibn Mas‘ud then noticed that the Prophet’s eyes were filled with tears.
This demonstrates that his recitation was not merely vocal performance but a profound emotional engagement with the meanings of the Qur’an.
Third: He ﷺ Was Deeply Moved by the Qur’an and Wept During Its Recitation
One of the most remarkable characteristics of the Prophet’s recitation was how deeply he was affected by what he read. Authentic narrations report that he would weep when reciting or listening to verses concerning mercy, punishment, and the greatness of Allah.
His humility and emotional response were so intense that the Companions could hear a sound from his chest like the boiling of a pot due to his crying.
This shows that true recitation is not measured only by vocal beauty or technical excellence, but by the presence of the heart and genuine reflection upon the words of Allah.
Fourth: He ﷺ Recited Slowly Without Hastiness
The Prophet ﷺ did not rush through the Qur’an. Rather, he disliked hurried recitation because haste could prevent reflection and lead to mistakes in pronunciation and understanding.
At times, he would repeat certain verses throughout the night, especially verses containing profound reminders about Paradise, Hellfire, or the majesty of Allah.
It is authentically reported that he spent an entire night repeating the verse:
“If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.” (Qur’an 5:118)
while weeping and supplicating to Allah.
This reflects the depth of his contemplation and interaction with the meanings of the Qur’an.
Fifth: He ﷺ Recited According to the Manner in Which the Qur’an Was Revealed
Jibreel عليه السلام reviewed the Qur’an with the Prophet ﷺ every year during Ramadan. In the year of the Prophet’s passing, Jibreel reviewed it with him twice.
This demonstrates the precision with which the Prophet ﷺ preserved and recited the Qur’an.
His recitation naturally embodied what later became known as the rules of Tajweed, including elongation (Madd), heaviness and lightness of pronunciation (Tafkheem and Tarqeeq), and the proper rules of stopping and starting. Since the Qur’an was revealed orally, the Prophet ﷺ was the first and greatest example of its correct recitation.
Sixth: He ﷺ Recited the Qur’an Throughout the Day and Night
The Prophet’s ﷺ relationship with the Qur’an was not limited to a single time of day. Rather, the Qur’an was an integral part of his daily life.
He recited it during night prayer, in the five daily prayers, during acts of remembrance, and as part of his regular devotional routine. Aishah رضي الله عنها reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had completed his assigned portion of Qur’an recitation.
This illustrates that the Qur’an was not merely an occasional act of worship for him, but a complete way of life.
Seventh: He ﷺ Loved Listening to the Qur’an from Others
Although he was the recipient of revelation, the Prophet ﷺ still enjoyed listening to others recite the Qur’an. This served as encouragement for his companions and emphasized the importance of excellence in recitation.
He once praised the voice of Abu Musa Al-Ash‘ari رضي الله عنه, saying:
“You have been given one of the flutes of the family of Dawud.”
This demonstrates that beautifying one’s recitation and improving one’s voice while observing the rules of Tajweed is a beloved and commendable practice.
Eighth: The Impact of His ﷺ Recitation on the Companions
The Prophet’s ﷺ method of recitation became the foundation of a great Qur’anic tradition among the Companions. They learned from him not only pronunciation and recitation, but also reflection, humility, and devotion.
They then transmitted the Qur’an exactly as they had heard it from him, letter by letter. This is one of the reasons why the Qur’an has remained perfectly preserved until today, recited in the same manner as it was during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.
Conclusion
The recitation of the Prophet ﷺ represents the perfect model that every Muslim should strive to follow. It combined accurate pronunciation, beautiful delivery, heartfelt reflection, emotional engagement with the meanings, and complete adherence to the guidance of the Qur’an.
His recitation was not merely the repetition of words. It was a way of life in which the teachings of the Qur’an were translated into humility, character, and action.
Whoever wishes to improve their recitation should take the Prophet ﷺ as their ultimate example: learning to recite with measured pace, beautifying the voice appropriately, reflecting deeply on the meanings, and allowing the Qur’an to transform the heart. In doing so, the recitation becomes a source of light, guidance, and elevation in both this world and the Hereafter.
