Faith (Iman) is the greatest blessing that Allah bestows upon His servants. It is the light that fills the heart, guides a believer to the straight path, grants peace and tranquility in this world, and leads to eternal success in the Hereafter. However, faith is not a fixed state that never changes. Rather, it increases and decreases—it grows stronger through acts of obedience and becomes weaker because of sins and negligence. For this reason, the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ were always eager to renew their faith. They reminded one another of Allah and would say, "Come, let us increase our faith for a while," meaning by remembering Allah, reciting His Book, and reflecting upon His blessings.

Both the Noble Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah clearly establish that faith increases through obedience and decreases through disobedience. This is the belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah. Believers are not all equal in their level of faith. Rather, they differ according to the certainty within their hearts, the righteous deeds performed by their limbs, and the sincerity with which they worship Allah.

In this article, we will explore the true meaning of faith, what it means for faith to increase and decrease, the reasons behind its strength and weakness, and practical ways to preserve and strengthen it in everyday life.

What Is Iman (Faith)?

Linguistically, the Arabic word Iman means belief or affirmation.

In Islamic terminology, Iman consists of belief in the heart, affirmation by the tongue, and actions performed by the limbs. It increases through obedience and decreases through sin.

This comprehensive definition combines the three essential elements of faith. Faith is not merely knowledge in the heart, nor is it simply words spoken by the tongue. Rather, it is a deeply rooted conviction whose effects become visible in a person's conduct and actions. When the heart is filled with faith, it naturally manifests itself through remembrance of Allah, sincere supplication, righteous deeds, and upright character.

Allah describes the believers in the Qur'an with qualities that clearly demonstrate the connection between faith and righteous actions. He says:

"The true believers are only those whose hearts tremble with reverence when Allah is mentioned, and when His verses are recited to them, they increase them in faith, and upon their Lord they place their trust." (Qur'an 8:2)

This verse clearly demonstrates that faith increases and that one of the greatest causes of its increase is listening to and reflecting upon the verses of Allah.

Does Faith Increase and Decrease?

The answer is yes. This is established by the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the righteous predecessors (Salaf).

Allah says:

﴿لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ﴾ [الفتح: 4]

"That they may increase in faith along with their present faith." (Qur'an 48:4)

He also says:

﴿وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا﴾ [المدثر: 31]

"And that those who believe may increase in faith." (Qur'an 74:31)

These verses prove that faith is not a single, unchanging level. Rather, it grows whenever a servant draws closer to Allah and weakens whenever they become distracted by sins and heedlessness.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

"Faith has over seventy branches. The highest of them is the statement: 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,' and the lowest of them is removing something harmful from the road. And modesty is one of the branches of faith." (Agreed upon)

This hadith teaches that faith consists of many branches. Some relate to belief, others to speech, and others to actions. The more these branches are present and practiced in a Muslim's life, the stronger their faith becomes.

How Does Faith Increase?

Faith increases through everything that draws a servant closer to Allah and nourishes the heart with certainty, reverence, and love.

One of the greatest means of strengthening faith is reflecting upon the Noble Qur'an. The Qur'an is not merely a book of laws and rulings; it is nourishment for the heart. It strengthens belief, reminds people of Allah's greatness, recounts His countless blessings, and describes the destiny of both the believers and the disbelievers. Through sincere reflection, certainty grows and faith becomes stronger.

This is why the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ were deeply affected whenever they listened to the Qur'an. Their hearts softened, their eyes filled with tears out of fear of Allah, and they experienced a noticeable increase in faith.

Faith also grows by consistently performing the five daily prayers. Prayer is the greatest pillar of Islam after the testimony of faith, and it is the servant's continuous connection with Allah. Whenever a Muslim performs prayer with sincerity and humility, they feel closer to their Lord, and this closeness strengthens their faith.

Likewise, frequent remembrance of Allah (dhikr) is among the greatest causes of increased faith. Remembrance revives the heart, removes heedlessness, and fills the soul with tranquility.

Allah says:

﴿أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ﴾ [الرعد: 28]

"Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace." (Qur'an 13:28)

Supplication (du'a) is another powerful means of strengthening faith because it reflects complete dependence upon Allah. A believer constantly asks Allah for guidance and steadfastness.

The Prophet ﷺ frequently supplicated:

"O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."

Keeping the company of righteous people is equally important. People are naturally influenced by those around them. Whoever accompanies people of faith and righteousness will be encouraged to worship Allah, and their own faith will naturally grow stronger.

Seeking authentic Islamic knowledge is another essential cause of increasing faith. The more a person learns about Allah's Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes, understands the Qur'an and Sunnah, and gains sound religious knowledge, the deeper their certainty and reverence for Allah become. True knowledge always leads to stronger faith.

Finally, reflecting upon Allah's creation is among the greatest means of increasing faith. Contemplating the heavens, the earth, the alternation of night and day, and the perfection of human creation strengthens one's conviction in the greatness, wisdom, and power of the Creator.

How Does Faith Decrease?

Just as faith increases through obedience, it also decreases through sins and heedlessness.

Every sin a person commits leaves a mark upon the heart. If they persist in sin without repentance, their connection with Allah weakens, their heart becomes hardened, and they become less affected by the Qur'an and acts of worship.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"When a servant commits a sin, a black spot is placed upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, his heart is polished clean. But if he returns to sin, the blackness increases until it covers his heart." (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi)

Faith does not decrease only because of major sins. Prolonged neglect of Allah's remembrance, becoming excessively occupied with worldly matters, neglecting acts of worship, and wasting time on things that bring no benefit all weaken a person's faith.

A person may not commit a major sin, yet they may abandon reciting the Qur'an, delay their prayers, reduce their remembrance of Allah, or become consumed by worldly distractions. Gradually, they find that their heart has become less humble, less attached to Allah, and less responsive to acts of worship.

Can a Muslim Feel Their Faith Increasing or Decreasing?

Yes. Faith has a clear and noticeable effect upon the believer's heart.

When faith is strong, a Muslim finds sweetness in prayer, enjoys reciting the Qur'an, loves acts of worship, dislikes sin, and experiences inner peace and tranquility.

When faith weakens, however, they may feel lazy in worship, less moved by the Qur'an, more inclined toward sin, and increasingly preoccupied with worldly concerns rather than the Hereafter.

For this reason, the righteous predecessors (Salaf) constantly examined the condition of their hearts and worked diligently to treat any weakness in their faith before it became more serious.

Do Sins Eliminate Faith Completely?

Sins weaken faith and diminish it, but they do not expel a Muslim from Islam unless they involve disbelief (kufr), associating partners with Allah (shirk), or one of the well-known nullifiers of Islam.

A believer may commit sins while still remaining a believer, although with deficient faith because of those sins. This is why Allah has legislated repentance and seeking forgiveness, and He has left the door of repentance open until the sun rises from the west or a person's soul reaches the throat at the time of death.

Whenever a servant sincerely repents, Allah purifies their heart and restores the strength of their faith by His mercy.

How Can Muslims Preserve and Strengthen Their Faith?

Maintaining strong faith requires continuous effort because the human heart constantly changes.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Indeed, the hearts are between two fingers of the Most Merciful, and He turns them as He wills."

For this reason, every Muslim should establish a daily portion of Qur'an recitation, perform the five daily prayers on time, frequently remember Allah and seek His forgiveness, attend gatherings of beneficial Islamic knowledge, and read authentic books on Islamic creed (Aqidah) and the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Muslims should also avoid everything that weakens the heart, including sins, doubtful matters, and harmful companionship.

Likewise, they should regularly examine their intentions and ask themselves whether they are acting sincerely for Allah or seeking the praise of people, because sincerity (ikhlas) is one of the greatest causes of steadfast faith.

Another important habit is consistently performing righteous deeds, even if they seem small. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the most beloved deeds to Allah are those performed consistently, even if they are few. Continuous obedience gradually strengthens faith over time.

The Impact of Strong Faith on a Muslim's Life

When faith becomes strong, it transforms every aspect of a person's life.

A believer becomes more patient during trials, more grateful during times of ease, and kinder and more compassionate toward others because they constantly feel that Allah is watching them.

Strong faith also gives a Muslim the ability to resist temptations and misconceptions. They remain steadfast during times of trial because their certainty is firmly rooted in Allah.

Faith fills the heart with peace and tranquility, enabling believers to face life's changing circumstances with confidence. They trust that Allah manages all affairs with perfect wisdom and mercy, so they neither despair during hardship nor become arrogant during times of prosperity.

One of the greatest effects of strong faith is that it shifts a person's focus from temporary worldly life to the everlasting Hereafter. As a result, they strive for deeds that will benefit them after death and prepare to meet Allah with a pure and sound heart.

Conclusion

Faith is one of Allah's greatest blessings, and it requires constant care and attention. It is not a fixed condition but something that increases through obedience and righteous deeds and decreases through sins and heedlessness. The more a Muslim comes to know their Lord, recites and reflects upon the Qur'an, performs prayer consistently, remembers Allah often, and keeps the company of righteous people, the stronger their faith becomes, filling their heart with certainty, peace, and tranquility.

On the other hand, neglecting acts of worship, persisting in sin, and becoming overly attached to worldly life at the expense of the Hereafter all contribute to weakening faith and hardening the heart. Therefore, every Muslim should regularly examine themselves, strive to discipline their heart through obedience, and continually ask Allah for steadfastness and guidance, following the example of the Prophet ﷺ, who frequently supplicated:

"O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."

Remaining steadfast in faith is among the greatest blessings a believer can receive. Increasing one's faith is the path to true happiness in this world and the means to attaining Allah's pleasure and everlasting Paradise in the Hereafter.
