Islamic creed (Aqeedah) is the foundation upon which the religion of Islam is built. It is the basis of all acts of worship, righteous deeds, and moral conduct. No good deed is accepted if one's belief is corrupted, just as sound belief is the first message conveyed by all prophets and messengers (peace be upon them). Their call always began with the worship of Allah alone before introducing prayer, charity, or any other Islamic rulings. For this reason, both the Qur'an and the Sunnah emphasize that the purity of faith and the soundness of belief are the keys to a person's righteousness in this world and ultimate success in the Hereafter.
In an age where misconceptions are widespread and information is accessible from countless sources, learning authentic Islamic creed has become a necessity for every Muslim. It enables believers to worship Allah with knowledge and certainty, understand the true meaning of faith, distinguish truth from falsehood, and remain steadfast regardless of changing circumstances.
What Is Islamic Creed (Aqeedah)?
Islamic creed (Aqeedah) is the firm and unwavering belief in Allah, His angels, His revealed books, His messengers, the Last Day, divine decree (Qadar)—both its good and what appears difficult—and everything authentically established in the Qur'an and the Sunnah that every Muslim is required to believe.
The word Aqeedah comes from the Arabic root 'aqada, which means "to tie firmly" or "to bind securely." It signifies a faith that is firmly tied to the heart, unshaken by doubts or temptations.
In Islamic terminology, Aqeedah refers to beliefs that are held with complete certainty, free from hesitation. It is not merely information to memorize or words to repeat; rather, it is a deeply rooted conviction that shapes a person's worship, character, conduct, and way of life.
Islamic scholars have therefore described Aqeedah as the foundation of the religion, while Islamic rulings and righteous deeds are its branches. When the foundation is strong, the branches flourish. When the foundation is weakened, the entire structure is affected.
Why Is Aqeedah the Foundation of Islam?
Reflecting on the Qur'an reveals that the first message delivered by every prophet was the call to worship Allah alone. Allah says:
"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying: Worship Allah and avoid false deities." (Qur'an 16:36)
The prophets did not begin by teaching detailed legal rulings; rather, they first corrected people's beliefs. Once the heart truly knows Allah and faith becomes firmly established, obedience naturally follows.
For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spent thirteen years in Makkah strengthening the faith of his companions before most practical rulings were revealed. The companions first learned faith, then they learned the Qur'an and Islamic legislation, allowing knowledge and action to grow together.
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said:
"We first learned faith, then we learned the Qur'an, and it increased us in faith."
This demonstrates that Aqeedah is not a secondary subject but the very foundation upon which all acts of worship are built.
The Sources of Islamic Creed
Islamic creed is not based on personal opinions, philosophical theories, or human desires. Rather, it is derived from divine revelation preserved by Allah.
The Noble Qur'an
The Qur'an is the primary source of Islamic belief. It explains the reality of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah), Allah's Names and Attributes, the existence of angels, the missions of the prophets, the Last Day, Paradise, Hell, and every essential aspect of faith.
The Authentic Sunnah
The Sunnah explains and clarifies the Qur'an. It contains detailed teachings regarding matters of belief, including the pillars of faith, the signs of the Hour, the events of the grave, and the authentic descriptions of Allah that were conveyed by the Prophet ﷺ.
The Consensus of the Righteous Predecessors (Salaf)
The Companions and the generations that followed them understood Aqeedah directly from the Qur'an and Sunnah and transmitted this understanding to the Muslim Ummah. Their methodology serves as the correct standard for understanding matters of faith.
The Pillars of Islamic Creed
Islamic creed is built upon the six pillars of faith mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ in the famous Hadith of Jibreel (Gabriel):
"Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree, both its good and what appears difficult."
These pillars are inseparable; true faith requires belief in all of them.
1. Belief in Allah
This is the greatest pillar of faith. It includes believing in Allah's existence, His Lordship (Rububiyyah), His exclusive right to be worshipped (Uluhiyyah), and His Most Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes.
A Muslim believes that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe, that He alone deserves all acts of worship, and that His Names and Attributes are affirmed as revealed without distortion, denial, comparison, or asking how.
2. Belief in the Angels
Angels are creations of Allah made from light. Allah assigned them various responsibilities, including recording deeds, protecting people by Allah's command, delivering revelation, taking souls at death, and other duties mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
3. Belief in the Revealed Books
Allah revealed scriptures to guide humanity, including the Scrolls of Ibrahim (Abraham), the Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel, and finally the Noble Qur'an, which Allah has promised to preserve until the Day of Judgment.
4. Belief in the Messengers
Allah sent His messengers as a mercy to humanity, calling people to worship Him alone and conveying His message faithfully. Muslims believe in all prophets without discrimination while affirming that Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet and messenger.
5. Belief in the Last Day
This includes belief in death, the life of the grave (Barzakh), resurrection, judgment, the scales, the bridge (As-Sirat), Paradise, Hellfire, and everything authentically reported by Allah and His Messenger concerning the Hereafter.
6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar)
Belief in Qadar means believing that Allah has complete knowledge of everything, has recorded it, wills whatever occurs, and creates all things. Whatever reaches a person could never have missed them, and whatever misses them could never have reached them. At the same time, Islam commands believers to take lawful means and never use destiny as an excuse for abandoning effort.
The Fruits of Sound Aqeedah
Correct belief produces profound effects in a Muslim's life.
It fills the heart with peace and tranquility because the believer knows that Allah manages every affair with perfect wisdom and mercy. As a result, hardships do not overwhelm them, nor do trials lead them to despair.
Sound Aqeedah also nurtures sincerity in worship. Since a believer knows that Allah alone deserves worship, every act of devotion is directed solely to Him.
It develops constant awareness of Allah, encouraging obedience in both public and private while discouraging sin because the believer knows that Allah sees every action.
Belief in divine decree cultivates patience, contentment, and resilience during hardships, preventing resentment and strengthening trust in Allah.
Moreover, sound Aqeedah equips Muslims to confront misconceptions confidently because their faith is built upon authentic knowledge and certainty rather than blind imitation.
The Relationship Between Aqeedah and Worship
Some people assume that belief and worship are separate matters. In reality, they are inseparably connected.
Prayer is only accepted when it is founded upon true belief in Allah. Charity benefits only those who sincerely believe in Him. Fasting, Hajj, and every righteous deed are accepted only when they are built upon correct faith and sincere devotion.
Allah says:
"Indeed, it has been revealed to you and to those before you: If you associate partners with Allah, your deeds will surely become worthless." (Qur'an 39:65)
Corrupted belief invalidates righteous deeds, while sound belief forms the basis for their acceptance by Allah.
Is Correct Belief Alone Sufficient Without Actions?
Just as deeds are not accepted without correct belief, genuine faith naturally produces righteous actions.
True faith is not merely verbal affirmation or intellectual knowledge. Rather, according to Ahl al-Sunnah, it consists of belief in the heart, affirmation by the tongue, and actions performed by the limbs. Faith increases through obedience and decreases through sin.
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ never separated belief from righteous conduct. Their understanding united knowledge, faith, and action.
How Can Muslims Preserve Their Aqeedah?
Maintaining sound belief requires continuous care and effort.
One of the greatest means is reflecting upon the Qur'an with understanding, for it is the strongest source of faith.
Muslims should also study Aqeedah from trustworthy scholars and reliable classical references, avoiding unknown or unreliable sources.
Adhering closely to the authentic Sunnah is equally essential, as the Prophet ﷺ explained every aspect of Islamic belief with complete clarity.
Frequent supplication is another important means. The Prophet ﷺ often prayed:
"O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."
Likewise, Muslims should avoid environments that spread doubts and should not rely on unreliable websites or social media platforms as primary sources for learning Islamic creed.
Common Misconceptions About Aqeedah
A common misconception is that studying Aqeedah is only necessary for scholars or students of Islamic knowledge. In reality, every Muslim is individually obligated to learn the amount of belief necessary to ensure the correctness of their faith.
Another misconception is that Aqeedah has little connection to ethics or daily conduct. In truth, sound belief is the very source of noble character because one who truly believes in Allah and the Last Day remains mindful of Allah in every action.
Another serious mistake is learning matters of faith from unqualified individuals or exposing oneself to doubts without first acquiring the authentic Islamic knowledge that protects one's faith.
Conclusion
Islamic creed is far more than theoretical information found in books. It is a living reality that fills the believer's heart with certainty, illuminates the path to Allah, and guides every aspect of life. The more a servant knows Allah and strengthens their Aqeedah, the stronger their faith, love, reverence, and devotion become, and these qualities naturally appear in their worship, character, and daily behavior.
For this reason, every Muslim should make learning authentic Islamic creed a lifelong priority by studying it through the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah according to the understanding of the righteous predecessors (As-Salaf As-Salih). Doing so enables believers to worship Allah with insight, remain steadfast upon the truth, and withstand the many trials and misconceptions of modern times.
Aqeedah is the foundation upon which a Muslim's entire life is built. It is the key to success in this world and salvation in the Hereafter. Through sound belief, sincere worship of Allah is realized, hearts find true tranquility, and believers attain the pleasure of Allah and the everlasting reward of Paradise.
